Hi.

I have a 1967 4020 with the M and W turbo option. What is the original exhaust stack dimensions for this tractor? How long? straight pipe or muffler? inside and outside diameters? What color - Black?

Also - what would have originally been on this tractor without the turbo? Same thing?

The first M&W kits came with a short [3ft.] regular staight pipe that later came chromed.Chrome straight pipes are a symbol of pride to many tractor enthusiasts. The regular JD muffler had a smaller diameter base and had and optional extension.M&W made a stainless steel muffler but most prefered the straight pipe as you could see better and listen to the whistle of the turbo. The turbo acted as a muffler. Now most tractors have turbos but in the 60s an add on turbo gave you something different[the first ones came with a blown head gasket garanteed in about 30 minutes at full power plowing at 140H.P.].The used turbos now sell for twice what they were new. We take them off as no one wants a tractor that has one on but will buy one to put on theirs[ figure that out].

Thanks for the info. I am trying to keep the tractor sort of original. I have seen many different lengths available - 36" and 48" seem most common. Did they ever come with 48"? What about diameter both inside and outside? Did they have an adapter onto the turbo or just keep the diameter of the turbo all the way up?

When I read your post it says M&W turbo option. If you mean it came with turbo the answer is no.To make it as close to original as possible that means removing turbo installing correct muffler and no one can say it is not original. The turbo makes your tractor more unique not like all the others ,has more power and sounds cool all of which I like.Original to me means unaltered in any way and not painted which eliminates all but a select few.The pipe lenght is whatever fits in your shed.Ive seen them with round gutters 5ft tall to 10in. zoomies to large 4in or more with smaller base to fit exhaust manifold. If you have a cab which is really uncool to some then it needs to clear top of cab to keep exhaust fumes out.The answer to your question is whatever you like the heck with the original police.just my opinion.

later chrome stacks were 48" tall and the same diameterd as the elbow on the turbo.M&W never made a stainless steel muffler the reckemended seting for HP was 115 hp on the 4010s & 4020s this would run many thousands of hours and not blow head gaskets. dont all the bs you read here many on here dont have a clue

I used to have one with about 118 HP and it ran a lot of years with no trouble. It had about a 3' straight pipe.

If you got an open station (OS) tractor, you definetly want the exhaust stack to be about 10-12 inches taller than your top of the head ...... unless you enjoy getting high on exhaust fumes....ahhhhhhh!! LOL

As far as how tall, yea you will want it taller than you. The exhaust fumes and noise is a killer after a while (mine is just about the top of my head right now). If you are running a standard 4020 muffler type then I recomend rummaging the muffler book at teh store. I am running I believe its a IH muffler right now. The base uses same pipe size albeit without the rim so I use a standard hd muffler clamp. The benefit is the outlet, its 3" pipe vs 2.75 ID pipe. You can't get the in between size pipe at least around here. 3" is easy simple and dirt cheap. You will need a 2 15/16" inlet ID pipe muffler and 3.0" outlet. The one I run sits perfectly at the level of the hood, the body is same diameter and slightly shorter, the outlet pipe is 8" long so you can get away with no extension if you wish. It was also cheaper than the 4020 D muffler sitting by it. I am happy with the sound and it does feel like it pulls better. Yes I know the seat of pants dyno isn't accurate lol.
