Replacing clutch and rear engine seal on a 4020 synchro. The flywheel has some pretty bad cracks. How much is too much?

Im not an expert by any stretch but if it was mine and I was putting a new clutch and associated parts in the tractor I would have the flywheel resurfaced for sure.

I don't have any experience with this, but I would definitely be up for resurfacing. I just wasn't sure if that would be enough with this much cracking. I'm not even sure where to take it to have it resurfaced.

Any good machine shop around your area should be able to help you out. Some of the deep heat cracks may not go away but the surface will at least be flat again.

you definitly need a resurface on that. its not only the cracks but its worn and will not be true. machine shop work.

You need to find an automotive machine shop with a flywheel grinder and a guy that knows how to use it and consults the specification book supplied by the flywheel grinder manufacturer or the official DEERE Technical Manual.

The ''step'' distance has to be kept correct by grinding off the same amount from the outer edge as was removed from the clutch area surface AND there is a limit as to how much can be removed or the square part of the 3 dowels will block the pressure plate from seating against the flywheel, making it unfit for re-use.

An experienced machinist can also verify that the heat cracking is not severe enough to to render it scrap.

You can get a new flywheel for $440,,they charge $100 to grind them,, it's hard to say how many times yours has been ground,, for best results I have been tossing them and installing new. If they have been ground too much the pressure plate bottoms out on the curved radius of the flywheel and keeps from meeting the plate fully. Also the cover will not set on the outer rim of the flywheel or on the anchor pins well.

I'm just curious, the Deere parts website shows $1600 for one, I do see aftermarket ones for sale for around $440, are they of quality?
