4020 fuel pump

I have a 1972 4020,the fuel pump was rebuilt 30 hours ago. It does not want to idle and it tries to run away. I have to yank the throttle lever up-and-down to keep it from running to fast .I took the timing cover off the fuel pump and it was clean. What should I try next thanks, RK

X 2 what Jim said. Was the metering valve replaced? If the head takes an oversize valve and a standard size put in governor will not shut down fuel correctly. Have the pump looked at again.

What model injection pump? Early 1972s came with the model CBC633 pump that uses rack-and-pinion gears to operate the throttle and delivery valve.
Those setups get worn gears and/or dry out. Also, they can't be "rebuilt." Just patched up and often with used parts. Often the pinion gear can be removed and flipped over 180 degrees to make it work better (if not done already). CBC pump has a round timing window and a tube that sticks out of the pump that holds the throttle gears.

If you have the JDB pump - the setup is completely different. If the rebuilder put the wrong delivery valve in there- the pump never would of worked right. I.e., not a problem that would only show 30 hours after an install. I'd suspect linkage hanging up under the cover. Easy to check with that cover off. I assume the engine always has the problem now and not just when hot?

(quoted from post at 08:37:05 12/30/13) 69 and70 models came with cbc pump 71 and 72 had jdb
