I hope to have some time to work on our 4020 gas this weekend (this part time farming stuff makes it tough to get anything done!!) I am going to start with new plugs (mostly because I can do that easily). I need to pull one and see what is in it now. Does anyone have a suggestion on what plugs to put in it? It starts hard, but will run ok except under load, then it misses. Thanks

I run autolite 388 in mine.

As part of a tune up I adjust the valves and do a compression check too.

Autolite 3116 non resistor and solid core ignition wires unless using a pertronix then use spiral wound suppression wires. Check for stuck advance weights. Is the choke blade 100% open when it's supposed to be. Drain the carb bowl a couple of times. This may flush some of the water, rust and dirt out.
How fresh is the gasoline ?

Unfortunately (for me) I am a novice mechanic, so I thought I would start with the plugs - I will drain the carb a couple times. This just has regular points. Is there a way to check the plug wires? Maybe pull them off one at a time to find the one that misses? The gas is from last summer - I would think its ok??

Adjusting valves is likely over my head - have never attempted before. So I hope to help it enough with new plugs, and maybe new points.

If I would change this over to electronic ignition - would it be a better starter? and also not foul plugs? The main problem we have with this tractor now is that it sits. When we ground feed every day and worked it a bit, it started and ran fine. Now it sits all winter, and really only is used on a mower in the summer. Do you think the electronic ignition would be the way to go?

it certainly would not hurt a bit. run hotter plugs and an electronic ignition. for some machines it makes a world of difference. sounds to me as though it would do so for yours.
