4020 injection pump

My injection pump is a little erratic . It idles good but when you throttle up slow it is very quick to reach 1500 rpms and the idle adjustment does not do anything at idle . I have rebuilt the pump the weight basket has been changed out . My question is could the governor spring be week or wrong length. Who knows what has been done years ago . And advice would be appreciated .

When you had it apart did you look closely at the metering valve for wear marks and also verify it moves freely? If not, it can be done without removing the pump from the engine.

By the way, my comments are are based on the assumption your 4020 has a DB or JDB style pump and NOT a C pump. If a C pump, such throttle issues are common when the rack and pinion throttle gears get worn or sticky.

I have the pump off and in the vice I will check the metering valve tonight when I get home every thing is lose nothing sticking very loose .

The metering valve looks good and turns free . It just seems like the governor spring is not putting enough pressure against governor ?
