4020 injector return tubes

Someone had a real brainstorm to come up with those little rubber tubes from the injector to the hard line, and then using those stupid wire-spring clamps.

Anyone know of special pliers for squeezing them things? I got a cheap pair of needle nose pliers I am going to try tack welding a fence staple or something to the side of one jaw for a guide.

Just take an old normal pliers and grind a groove in both jaws. It will help if you also drill a shallow hole in the center of each jaw.

Actually with the correct pliers the clamps are rather easy to install. Or you could use regular adjustable hose clamps. I'm sure you know to replace all boots at the this time.

In addition to what's already been said......the return line(s) will slip into the top of the boots with the clamps already installed, so it's only the bottom of the boots that are trouble.

I modified a pair of common "CeeTee" pliers by drilling a hole in the end of the jaws and another crossways in the jaws. Works pretty good if I can find them.

Well, I got them on today. Held a pair of 1/4 inch flat washers in the jaws of my el-cheapo needle-nose pliers and tacked them to the tip of the jaws. Took the bench grinder to it and opened up one side of the washers, then ground some of the tip off the pliers. Worked fairly well, but to do it again, I would put one washer closer to the tip than the other.

I replaced 5, lost the bottom clamp on #2 and had to cut the new tube to get it off the injector to retrieve the clamp off its base. Would be a lot easier job with the hood or the loader off and a filter removed.

Would also be easier if the tubes had been out in the sun all day.

Did manage to lose two of the clamps, was able to find a couple water pipe clamps that fit, so it's up and running again.

Never ran one of these til I moved out here, 3 magnums, 4450, 4430, and two 4840s on the place, and I'd as soon run the 4020 as any of them. Never thought I would like the 3 pt on the dash until I started using it to move round bales. I've dropped a few hints as to how much oil we could save next summer if we were to pull 'er in and re-pack the (158) loader cylinders over the winter, sounds like a project I could get into. Get a warm weekend I might even wash and wax it.
