4020 POWER SHIFT

I have a buddy with a 66 or 67 model 4020 power shift and having trans trouble, he's spent a lot of money on the trans with Deere dealer and still not right, but that's a long story i won't get into, my question is he's wanting to put a syncro in this tractor so will his engine fit in a gas or lp burner without a lot of problems or which is the best route to go? Thanks for any help

I don't think the question is so much "wanting to put a syncro in this tractor" as it is "finding a sychro tractor with a bad engine" to install his engine in because EVERYTHING behind the engine will have to be swapped out!

What are the powershift issue and what did the dealer do?
I want to think that it will be easier and cheaper to fix the powershift than the alternative.

Concerning differences in the two transmissions, Everything from the back of crankshaft to where the final drives bolt up is different. Hydraulic oil lines down left frame rail to to hydraulic pump are different along with cooler.
If you had a "complete" 4020 gas tractor with a useable synchrorange transmission, the diesel engine from the PS tractor can be installed in the gas chassis pretty easy. It will Take a different / diesel synchrorange flywheel or the gas flywheel will need to be altered for the diesel ring gear. The diesel air cleaner from the PS tractor will have to be swapped with gas AC as they are larger / different. I do one or two of these every year. DW

Just find the back half of a pre 69 synchro 4020 and it should bolt right up. I had an uncle that did this to a 3020. He had a synchro transmission that was wore out and I had a 3020 powershift with a bad engine. Gave it to him and they just split the two and put the powershift on his. These were early models also. It worked out very good for him.

I'm not sure what all happened at Deere but they rebuilt the trans and it worked fine and then after a few months of sitting between using the tractor the next outing it started acting up again so Deere took tractor back to the shop checked it out and said someone had contaminated the oil so warranty was voided, so???????? here we are

Acting up? I do assume that means the transmission is slipping?
If it is, you need to install pressure gauges on the clutch and brake ports and cycle through the gears (with the transmission disconnect) and see what you are getting for pressures. This will tell a lot and where to go from here.

Or it could just be sticking valves. Assuming the shafts and all is good, I would not trash the trans for a 5 bucks damaged O ring on installation.
You do not have a lot to loose by buying a shop manual and go into it.

The feeling of victory when you are done will feel good.
