My 1967 4020 pto slips with batwing mower but while in the shop I noticed the rear main seal appears to be leaking on the motor which I am sure is causing the disconnect clutch to slip , am I correct in my thinking as the rear main was replaced in like 1979 when we overhauled the engine and went through the transmission packs

If the disconnect clutch is slipping under heavy PTO load there would be a noticeable drop in ground speed at the same time.

Have you checked PTO pressure? If the light-duty linkage to the PTO valve bends or the little lever on the PTO valve is loose on it's little shaft the valve doesn't get fully turned to where it needs to be and pressure will be low, not to mention all the other things that can happen to the PTO clutch system.

If you are very in-tune to how the tractor should sound and react the easiest way to detect if the disconnect/torque limiter is slipping is by doing the following. Get on the road and get the tractor in 7th pull the throttle wide open and just as the engine is about full rpm slip it in 8th. Should be able to tell if it is a solid shift or if the dry clutch is slipping making it more of a “slide” instead of a shift.
As others stated, proper PTO clutch pressure is very important.
