Looking at a 72 JD 4020 that is missing the rear serial number plate. It has correct motor and wide front.Has been restored to excellent condition.Question how much if any does this hurt its value. It also does not have diff lock which hurts them some depending on buyer.72s are on a lot of shopping lists and are as hot as any 40 yr old tractor that has higher production numbers.Maybe the lack of plastic and computer technology is good.

Anymore serial number tags mean everything to most.
It would surly have to devalue it,but I have no clue as to how much ? I know if I had such a thing I'd have a hard time finding a buyer for it cause of the tag. Others will luck out and find a buyer who won't have a clue about where to even look for that tag and just got to have a 4020 cause it is the lastest craze.

There's really no good legal reason to not have a tag on a 4020.With the position the tag is in i would think it would be next to impossible to be knocked off my accident.Unless the rear end was changed and they didn't transfer the tag over.

I just recently sold a 4020 with a tag, and the guy was so hot to have one, he never even looked at it.

IIRC, there may be a way to sent engine block number and a few other "landmarks" and still get a tag made to replace the origional. Just dunno if I read about it here on YT or in GM or ??.... remember it to be described as a PITA, maybe someone else can chime in???

ok this post is fishy also. mr anderson is on here daily buying and selling i would think he has an idea. i would be cautious...family disagreements, hidden asset from lender, divorce?
thats the only time i know of anyone "losing" a tag. yes, i remember a place making new tags.
saw it on here. the post caused a huge controversy. i belief you had to supply the original tag tho.

Sorry 5020 not trying to be fishy just needed an opinion as I have not encountered this before. It just seems odd that the plate is missing as they are usually attached well and are in a place where they are protected.True I do sell some and this site is a great place to advertise, buy, sell, and be able to have knowledgeable people with the same interests such as Jim,Tim,and B&D to gain some input into this great pastime, hobby or business that we all enjoy.I get better answers here than at local dealer as everything I ask about is older than the person answering .

I forgot to add after 47+ years of marriage I dont think divorce would be a reason for my fishy question.Just wanted an opinion nothing more.

hi--no, i'm sorry. my post didnt come out right. it is odd like you say....and i stated the reasons it would be gone. but it is a '72......i bet you will overlook it-lol.

IMHO there's nothing fishy about Larry's question. I've transacted business with Larry on some tractors and he's a nice man to do business with. It is unusual for a SN plate to be missing but as previously stated the trans housing could have been replaced and technician could have failed to install the tag.

ok--i value this site to much. this is a public apology to larry. my question did not come out right. there was no implication to larry. the implication was to the owner of said tractor.

I have a few come through here with no tags and have seen a few with the tag hanging on one rivet,I guess lots of UN-explainable incidents can cause them to get knocked loose ....some of these old Gals have been in a lot of Battles over the years...What a story they could tell....
