4020 steering issue

My new to me 4020 has a steering issue when starting cold, the wheels need to be turned stop to stop before the steering wheel has control of them....after that everything is as it should be. Any ideas? or is this normal for the hydraulic steering on these tractors?

You have to let the clutch out after you start the tractor. Pushing in the clutch for starting disengages the pump for steering. At least it did on my 66 4020 with the powershift tranny.

It's a Powershift, I don't need to disengage the clutch to start it...at least I don't belive I do but I'll pay better attention when I start the tractor but I don't rember if I depress the clutch out of habit or not.

More than likely seals on pistons in steering motor have failed. One can replace these seals by securely supporting front half of tractor then removing front axle & 1 side frame

Your statement is correct concerning tractors with Powershift trans as long as short handle on LH side dash isn't moved rearward which disengages damper clutch. Technically tractors with Synchro-range trans don't require traction clutch pedal depressed for engine to start if trans is in neutral or park position.
