4020 steering re-build clip

Finally had a chance to watch the whole thing. Very nicely done. I also like the test stand for all the different valves.

I'm curious, do you grind the valve seats in the valve housing where the R59083 valves seat?? I don't know if any of the books talk about it but I know there's a set of stones similar to SCV grinding stones.

No,, I have never used the stones,, my old dealership never had them when I was there,, I clean them well and if a set looks a bit grungy I swap them out with a good set,, I keep a lot of spare parts for them..

Do you ever have others remove their valve/column, ship it to you for a rebuild and then shipped back to them? Or do you require that the item be delivered and picked up in person? My next question is if you do have people ship things to you at our expense of course, what generally speaking does a repair like you did on the steering valve/column cost ? I'm looking for a ballpark figure as I'm in Maine and it will be a sizeable shipping/return fee along with the repair. I have a JD dealer within 40 miles of me but they are extremely proud of their work. Thanks if you care to be bothered with taking the time to answer.

Tim accepts JD hyd control valves for ship in/ship out repair. Shown in photos below is some of Tim's photos I have saved on my computer

Yes , most of the valves come in UPS from all over,, I did a valve for some one in Maine a few years ago,, The steer valves weigh 74 pounds I just sent one to Salt Lake city it cost $192 one way,,to Iowa area about $90 or so. Parts and service usually run around $400 exchange plus shipping,, I see them On line for $900 exchange,, I bench test them here to prove them,, they can be a bit ornery to adjust some times. It's 18 here this morning,, and my waste oil furnace is doing a great job..

Thanks tim, I'll need to crunch some numbers I guess...shipping from Maine to Iowa and back could be a deal breaker, I appreciate you taking time to respond and when the time comes I'll know more what approach I'll take. That being said I know where to come to find you. Thanks again. I watched the video...I envy you with a shop like you have.

Actually Mcrafty1, Tim is in central Ohio and not Iowa. I happen to live within a couple hours drive of him and a year and half ago brought him my leaking steering valve from my 3010 and exchanged it for a rebuilt one. Has worked good ever since. I am no mechanic by a long shot and was nervous about removing my defective valve and installing a good one. It is a bit of a time consuming job, but is relatively simple. As Tim states, they weigh 74 lbs, so they can be a bit of a mongrel to wrestle around in and out. Use of a helper is invaluable if you have one.

Thanks, all good info.....When the time comes I'll check on the cost to ship to an fro an determine my best option, I'm not using my tractor to farm per-say, just some bush hogging and such, my business is earthwork. The tractor is more for my hobby/toy when I retire so it's just something I'm looking to correct before I do retire...after that money will be getting a lot tighter in my world if that makes sense.
