4020 Transmission Oil Temperature

I have a 1967 4020 with Powershift. The transmission oil gauge shows an overheated condition after 4-5 hours of bush hogging using the PTO. It never heats up when just plowing, etc. Only with the PTO and only after a long time of mowing. I have cleaned the hydraulic oil cooler of debris. Is there a test for this? After it finally gets hot, the only way to cool it is to turn off the PTO and let it run. Thanks for any help.

Kent,
why will overfilling the trans make it run hot? not arguing, just wondering. i have a 4020 powershift also what will run hot but usually cause my cooler is loaded with crud.
thanks

Hi, Does yours heat up while using the PTO only or anytime the cooler is dirty? Mine doesn't get off of cold except when I use the PTO for a long time. My cooler isn't dirty and my fluid level is fine.

no. only time i ever had a problem was when it was low on fluid or the cooler plugged. i run a 10 ft disc mower with mine for hours and never even moves the gauge, again, as long as cooler is clean and full on fluid.
have you changed filters?

Yes, I have changed both filters. I had heard something about where they can get an internal high pressure leak in one of the remotes. I don't know how to check for this though. I wondered if that would make them heat up all the time or not. Mine is only PTO related.

you can do a search on this site for that under the archives, hopefully someone with more knowledge than me will post on here for you. sorry could not help more.

Thought the oil cooler on my tractor was clean until removing the hood and seeing all the oily mud clogging it.
Given the age and hours on the tractor and that the pulleys are factory original. Even a new belt will slip on the fan and gen' worn pulleys.
Over tightening just tears the bearings out b.t.w.
Have you put pressure gauges on the trans test ports?

No I have not put gauges on the test ports. What should they show? I think I can get the gauges to borrow. What is the procedure for checking this?

guy i know had 4230 run so hot 2 miles in road gear and it was hot hot replaced the broken dip stick and drained oil down to ware it should have been was ok after that he had a small leck and had been adding oil with out the dip stick

You'll need to put the trans disconnect a LH rear of operators platform in "neutral" It's best to have the gauge test manifold with 6 or 7(I can't remember the number of gauges) gauges in it. You'll need a chart showing which ports should have psi in each respective gear. Pressures should be in the 165# range.

If it takes 3HP to rotate a drum pack submerged in oil that normally operates above the oil level. 3HP / 2.25KW of heat will be added to the trans oil. Same reason why some engines are operated with a deep sump oil pan or dry sump oiling system. Less power loss and oil heating with less crank & rod thrashing of the oil.

I have not yet figured it out. I cleaned the trans. Cooler real good and have not had the problem since. This issue was at the same time I had a leak in a steering line, I wondered if air in the system would cause this, I also had been using the rear remotes with a disc and had heard that the remote valves can cause this problem. My gauge goes up to midway exactly two hours into mowing in really tall grass. This year it did no go past this halfway mark. I never have the problem in uses under three hours, plowing, mowing, whatever. How is your
Problem? Only after a long time or right away? I am worried it will return and put me out of business, this is my only larger tractor. Let me know if you have any resolution to your problem. Everybody I ask about it just says to change filters and clean the cooler. I think there is more to it than that.

Hi Rick,
Haven't worked on mine yet. Rarely use the tractor so don't have many opportunities to troubleshoot. Mine seems to over heat only when using the PTO and it does take about two hours to occur. I've changed the oil, filters, and checked the screen and this didn't fixe the problem. Haven't cleaned the cooler yet but probably not a bad idea.

Please let me know what you find. My email address is [email protected].

Thanks.

OK - I have read to clean the cooler real well with soap and water. I did this and haven't had the problem. I would be interested in hearing back if you find a confirmed problem with yours.

Thanks
