4020 Transmission

Considering a 4020. I'm really, really, really new to old (or new) JDs. I think they have two types of transmissions??? I'm talking about the one where the shift lever has two (three???) forward speeds and one reverse, then in another position has another "range???" and in total, three or four ranges???
Dunno what type that is called.
My question, if the transmission works in only one or two "ranges" and perhaps only a gear or two in those "ranges" what is/are the problem(s) and is it very difficult/expensive to fix? Thanks for advice. kelly

From what I am understanding it sounds like the sychronizers are bad,,takes about $2500 parts and about $1800 labor here, double that at a dealer...
