Im considering a green tractor, but would like to know the pros and cons of each the 4020 and the 5020. Also how many loaded and unloaded tandem axel gravity wagons can each pull? thank you

How many unloaded gravity wagons?? The most logical question is more like how much weight can either the 4020 or 5020 stop. Then you have to factor in hills. And then you have to think safety for those you may encounter while pulling the loaded wagons. Both the 4020 & 5020 will easily slide the rear tires while braking even with lots of ballast. The rest is physics...weight on tractor tires, hills, weight of towed items. My brother & I used to pull 600 bu to the local mill years ago with a 4020 weighing about 12k. With todays rampant litigation... I would never do that again. Your question is almost like how big is a tree.

Two completely different different tractors.5020 were produced from 1966 to 1972 with 12,909 being made. They were underpowered for there size and dont have very good resale and would pull two big Brent 800 bu wagons with brakes. The 4020 is still the most popular JD model being made from 1964 to 1972 and there were over 185,ooo produced.it would pull one large brent easily equipted with brakes. Most 4020s in good shape bring about what they cost new.4020s were 95H.P. the 5020 were around 120H.P.Depending on weights fluid duals the empty weight on a 4020 is around 9K and 5020 probably 12K.I see people pulling large wagons with 8000# 4WD pickups 40 MPH but are not too safe. The fact that there is no license for trailers encourages large wagons. For us semis are the only safe way to transport grain due to the brakes ,speed and lighting.

I would look for a 4400 series if pulling a lot of gravity
wagons. The extra weight and FWD really make a big
difference.

Back in the mid 60's a fellow was complaining about hes 110 lawn mower throwing oil out of the crankcase. Long story short ,foung out he was pulling a wagon to town loaded with soybeans and he had to go down a hill on the way , just to show you some perspective of whats common sense .Today a 4 wheel drive tractor gets shoved around with a 1000 bu grain cart .

David are you sure you didn't mean 7400 or 8400 instead of a 4400 CUT?

I had 3020s and a 5020. My 5020 had duals and was loaded down to weigh 10 pounds under 10 tons. I used it to pull a 5300 gallon Husky liquid spreader and it handled that just fine. You find a good running 5020 and it will pull all the gravity wagons you want to put behind it.
