4020 with non adjustable front axle

My son bought a non running 1968 4020 diesel today at an auction today for $3200. The tractor came from canada and it has a non adjustable front axle. Just
wondering what the purpose of these axles is.

We got the tractor running easy enough but it has no hydraulics. Have to dive into that tomorrow.

i understand that. lol I just wonder does this mean its a standard tractor or a wheatland or just a row crop with a non adjustable axle?

I've got a 4020 with that type front end. It has the large rear fenders and wide rear tires and originally did not have 3 ph. Book calls it a standard.

JD never used the term "Wheatland" for the 4020. Just rowcrop and standard. You need to look at the serial number to determine if its a rowcrop or standard chassis. BTW, adjustable or fixed front axle was an option on the standard tractor and so was 3-point.

Standard front axle was non-adjustable for frt tire widths due to no crop(corn, cotton, milo, peanuts, etc) rows to follow of different widths.

On subject of no hyd's is frt pump shaft turning when engine crankshaft turns? Next is change hyd filter & check/clean trans oil suction screen.

It was a fixed tread wide front. To determine if your tractor was shipped as a standard, look at the serial number as mentioned below. There should be 4 digits before the actual number. If the tractor is a 4020 standard diesel, those digits should be 223. If a row crop diesel 213. They will be followed by either an R or a P, depending on if the tractor is a syncro or a power shift.

Those front ends could be put on a row crop tractor as well. They were likely a bit more rugged, and lets face it, most adjustable ones have been fixed by rust in the past 50 years :)

Lot of things, like front axle, 3 point hitch, fenders, were options. My '67 4020 is a standard, with 3 point, adjustable front axle, and the huge wide rear fenders with the dust panels.

We had a 64 4020 powershift with the 4010 wheatland fenders, PTO, solid front axle, and no 3-point with 23.1-30 tires.

We found out the tractor was just low on hydraulic fluid. Topped it off and the hydraulics worked great. We pulled the cab off and I feel it looks much better now. It did have some leaky return lines but we fixed those. The rpm kind of had a mind of its own so we pulled the injection pump off and the governor ring had desinagrated. So we rebuilt the pump and she runs great now. It needs a new grill and 1 side screen but other than that it seems ok. This tractor has a wide block like a 4010 but it has pencil injectors. Its a 1968. Would it have origanally come with a wide block and pencil injectors? Another odd thing is it has split rims on the front and the 6 six bolts are much larger than a normal 6 bolt wheel.

It's possible your front end could be from an industrial tractor such as a 600, an industrial 4020. A picture would help us.

Here are a few pictures. These are the times that were on it when he bought it. Not sure why they have such a different sized tire. We were going to put some different rims and tires on it but these bolts won't fit through a normal 6 bolt rim.
