4020LP ignition

I recently bought a 1966 4020 LP powershift tractor. It has an electronic ignition installed in distributor. It has a factory 6v coil and the resister has been removed. Also has NGK AB-6 spark plugs. It is a 12v positive ground system with 12 volt generator and starter. Tractor runs good once you get it started but likes to pop off like its going to run but not start. I replaced the battery with a new 1000ca/900cca but had to jump it and then it started. Also when in 8th gear pulling a slight hill it will start popping until you shift down doesnt matter if your on liquid or vapor.

If its a 12 Volt tractor you need EITHER a 6 volt coil PLUS an external series voltage dropping (12 down to 6) ballast resistor orrrrrrrrr a
full true 12 volt rated coil (No ballast required) otherwise the 6 volt coil will overheat........TRUE for points or elec ignition.........

If you can, remove the electronic ignition plate from the distributor to clean and lube the advance springs under the plate. Also check to see how much the distributor shaft moves up and down. Had to replace
one dist.(easier/cheaper than finding shims) because the shaft was moving up to much and the electronic ignition wasn't sensing/seeing the magnets in the ring on the shaft. Made a new tractor out of it.

Would a petronix flame thrower 12v coil work? Would I need a 1.5 ohm or 3 ohm?

Do I need a 1.5 ohm 12v coil or 3 ohm 12v coil? Thinking about going with a flame thrower from petronix.

GENERALLY SPEAKING on a 12 Volt tractor with old style points and condensor ignition, you can use EITHER a
full true 12 volt rated coil, typically around 3 ohms, ORRRRRRRRRRR a 6 Volt coil PLUS an external series
voltage dropping (12 down to 6) ballast resistor.

HOWEVER with after market high energy elec ignition systems the rules can change subject to the
manufacturers design and specifications
