4030 vs 2840

When new, which was a better tractor, deere 4030 or 2840?Just curious as to what you guys that know them best think?I have a 2240 w/fel right now,a very handy machine.I use it for chores around the place, brush hogging and sometimes baling hay.My main haying/farming tractor is a Farmall 656D.Good tractor and I love the looks of it.But looking for more hp in the 80 to 90 hp range.Always liked the looks of the larger deeres. Now that I think about it,I would love to have a 4020 and a Oliver 1800!!!...At least their both green!LOL

Would give the advantage to the Waterloo as well. Question for Tx Jim though, was the perma clutch not an option? I thought I had seen reference to a dry clutch in the Service Manual. I could look in the parts catalog but I bet you are quicker!

Wet clutch only no dry clutch option on 4030

You are right about the dry clutch.
It was in some service manuals but was never made available for sale.
Thankfully they must have come to their sences in time.

I have a copy of a 4230 tech manual that show a dry clutch as well. I think deere was covering all the bases for some unknown reason.

The family tradition here was frugality. So, even though my cousin liked to trade frequently, he did so carefully. I assume the 2840 was less expensive than the 4030, because that's what he got. It was OK. Ran good. Quiet. Good hydraulics. But the steering was a joke- not heavy enough for a loader- was always coming loose. The real trouble was it was always going back to the shop. This little issue or that. So cousin finally threw off caution, and traded for a 4240. WOW. What a culture shock. First tractor here with a cab. But not just a cab- total climate control!

It all worked out fine in the long run. But I suspect if the 4030 had been purchased instead of the 2840, it would have stayed around a lot longer.

4030 is the better one. I have 2 4030's and a 2950, 4030 is just easier to use, controls are handier, seat is higher for better veiw of baler or whatever your pulling, perma clutch and quad-range tranny. I think the 4030 is just a little better on fuel to. The 2840's that where around here all had camshaft problems, don't remember exactly what it was though.

Are you sure your not looking at a dry "Power shift" clutch?? There were no dry clutches used on Quad's and Sychro's....
