Looking at a one owner 78 4040 with 4100 hours. New interior, seat and rear tires. Three valves converted to pioneer. It has the quad range transmission. Everything works with no leaks and good paint, clean and tight. I would like a power shift but have never seen a 4040 with one. Seller wants $21000. Seems a bit high, any opinions?

That does sound a bit high,, but they are a very good tractor, a friend of mine bought a 4040 4-post, quad, dual outlets clean tractor for $11,500 last summer, the good cab with fresh interior is an added value for sure, plus the low hours,,and then compare to a new tractor that size, that will be plagued with electrical issues in a few years,,,I would go for it...the 40's will be around for a long time earning their keep..they are one of the best series that Deere made..

Think about what fixing up a rough tractor will cost even if the tranny and engine are good.
Interior 400
Seat. 200
Rear tires 1500
Front tires 300
New roof 500
Ac work 1000 easily
Tachometer 200

You can sink a lot of money in one really quickly

Just bought one simular to the tractor u are looking at
Triple remotes ,hydraulic seat , long axles , original paint that will wax and a power shift with 4400 hours
Got it from the original owner.
Paid the same price as they are asking and it comes with a double auger snow blower and duals
I'm proud to get it my father said it will be a tractor u have for life
Think of it this way they are the newest generation of tractors next to collect and the best of a 4020
No electronics and hardly any plastic

Hard to find nice low houred originals.I sold one with only 963 hours P.S. 3 scvs very nice and it brought $38K and had more than one buyer interested I also bought a nice 3600 hour true open station quad nice original gave $17K.I would guess the one owner ,low hours ,new ties make it about right at $20K+.If it was a 50/55 would be more desirable do to better power shift and bigger engine or also 359T was available or 466 and later turboed 466 in 4055.The non plastic hooded tractor with less technology sell well.I personally think JD should offer a simple version of tractors, planters, sprayers and combines for the older farmers that aren't computer literate.

I have a 4040 ps that I bought years ago to feed cows in the winter pd 17k for it had it redone and use it planting and for baling hay and anything else I can do with it they are a very nice unit and I certainly wouldn't part with it for 21 looks a little funny when you get in cab with surefire control, greenstar display and planter monitor but she still gets the job done.
