4050 seat

Bought an 1983 4050. Has hydraulic seat that doesn't function well and seems to present an expensive project to rebuild.
Researching switch back to a mechanical seat suspension. Trying to learn what options and cost and complexity would be involved.
Appreciate hearing from anyone who may have dealt with this or have suggestions. Thanks.

What's wrong with your Hydra-cushion seat?

It's possible the cushion cylinder is low on nitrogen & needs to be recharged.

You can get aftermarket accumulators fairly affordable if you look around.
This might be a good option!

The way those seats are raising at startup is very fun.

They don't re-charge well,,the blatter gets leaky,,and you loose the nitrogen back into the oil..

Id try to keep that hydraulic seat if you could a lot better than the alternative. I have one that leaked the nitrogen out and I just put air in it every so often.

The valve for a 4040 (that the handle in the cab operates) was around $1200-1400 last time I checked ?? So the guy went with an air seat. Check with K&M seats, think they have air seats made for your tractor.

I have the diagnostic manual and none of the parts are throw away parts.

You need to follow the procedures and fix each item according to your tests. I agree an air ride kit works good as well. But I am not liking the farting sound of the air compressor compared to the fast moving hydraulic seat.

I just finshed working on one from a 4640. Valves were stuck and had dirt settled out in bottom . Cleaned out and put new o-rings ,balls and springs in it. Seems to respond to moving control levers. Just takes time and patience to get apart. Parts were available at my dealer.

Thanks for all of your responses. At the moment I am leaning to K&M with a mechanical suspension kit that replaces the old hydr. system and has an adapter plate that lets us use the old seat. Instructions make it sound like reasonably doable. Says it provides parts to cap off the hydr. lines. Appears to price at $632. Will call them and confirm that arrangement, process and cost. Any obvious kinks in my thought process? There usually is and I realize it about half way thru the job when I have invested the max money and labor only to realize it won't work!
