4055 Steering motor repairs

I am working on our 4055 w/ mfwd and am having some difficulty removing the steering arm from the pinion shaft to replace the seal. Just wondering if I am missing something or if it could just be stuck that bad. I dropped the axle out and with arm bolt removed have tried several pullers and methods to get the arm off with no luck. Is a leaking pinion shaft a sign of internal leaks? thanks Adam

Use a hand sledge and smack it on the side away from the arm "Very" hard a few times,,it's on a taper and doing this will sorta "Quake" the arm and it will let loose. on a side note this seal normally only leaks when the steer piston seal are worn or the seal drain line is obstructed..

Thanks Tim. Hitting the arm with the hammer worked great! The shaft seal started leaking last winter feeding cattle when it was so cold. Could that have helped to cause this or is it just time for a rebuild with 12,000 hrs on the tractor? Can it be done with removing one frame rail or do I need to pull the motor housing out of the front. Thanks

yes you can just remove one frame rail to do it,,,,now would be the time since you already have the front axle out of the way,,if you decide to do it now I can walk you through it,, [email protected]
