41 B transmission shifter

On my 41 B the tranny shifter has alot of slop in it and I can pull the shifter up and push it back down. What holds this in place?

There is a snap ring on the shifter that ordinarily holds the shifter in.Yours is probably missing.

There's a groove in the bottom of the shifter that the snap ring fits in. Mine got filled up with crud and rust and once I cleaned it out, it lasted for quite a while. Last time it popped off in the winter, I bored a hole through the shaft and put a washer and cotter pin. No more problems.
