41 H shifter boot ...

I just got a leather shifter boot from deere for my 41 H and I was wondering how to put it on- does the rough side go out ? it looks like the way it is molded the rough side would go up but maybe someone here has done this before. and also what leather treatment do you all reccommend ? This thing cost me $52 dollars ! Thanks mike

Go to the www.jdhpubs.com web site and there is a good write up in the articles/diagrams tab called gear shift. Pat Browning described in detail how everything goes together. The interesting thing is that the order that he shows the parts puts the spring under the leather boot. The parts book PC304 shows the spring above the boot. I built mine like the parts book shows but never really new if that is how they are supposed to be.

The ones I did years ago the smooth side was up.

$52.00 !!! holy cow they sure are expensive now. I better go put some kinda treatment on mine to preserve it unless it is too late.

They were 11 bucks last time I bought one.Find some sheep skin leather and make your own.I keep the shifter area covered with a piece of canvas when the tractor is idle.I bought a lot of sheep skin leather scrap years ago and made 4 full length aprons for friends. Its sold by the pound, very tough leather.
