410 massey combine

Awful to work on, just awful, and the engine made the cab HOT...did thresh good, but I would rather run the other red, silver, green, or orange.

I run a 540...similar to a 510/410, they are a little warm in the cab, but do a real nice job of threshing in my opinion. If a guy could find a nice straight machine that had been maintained I wouldn't be afraid of it.

Masseys always did a real good job of threshing and cleaning BUT as someone said they are brutal to work on and I mean brutal. The engine compartment is cramped and alot of repairs require removing the drive wheels. Parts are unbelieveably expensive and some are hard to get for the older machines. Maybe look for a nice 6600/6620 Deere or a M2 gleaner. Good luck Ron

I know what u mean.I like I.H. red myself. But this old combine comes with both heads it is clean and cheap. But I guess u get what u pay for.Might be -?-- when it breaks?

We ran a 410 for years. Decent machine but was not the easiest to work on as mentioned.

We liked it.

The 410 will break down, just like any other brand. Look around to see how far away the dealers are and if they stock parts for older Masseys. Then sit down and do a little daydreaming. No kidding! Think of yourself working for hours trying to get at the broken part, then driving for hours to some distant dealer for an overpriced part, driving back, and then finding out it's the wrong part. Now you're screwed because there are no other dealers anywhere close. And while this is going on the harvesting conditions are ideal and three days of rain is in the forecast. This is a very real scenario that will happen. If you have two or three Massey dealers within fifty miles, you might be OK, otherwise I'd seriously consider passing up this deal and finding a green one or another shade of red. Silver ones are good machines that are easy to work on, but again you have the dealer problem. Jim

well another good thing is a friend of mine has two of them for parts.there is nearby dealers also.

We have one and it works pretty good. They are a bit hard to work on if you have to climb up in them (especially when we had to put the grain pan back in my 10yr old brother was the only one who fit!) Our cab has a blower in it that keeps it decently cool. Ours does have a large header but we don't have especially large yields most years <50 BU/A wheat.

We were having issues with the gearbox randomly cutting out on the header thus the skipped wheat (this was an insured field that got hailed out anyways)

In that age of combine I would look at maybe a JD 6600 or a IH 715. You can find them cheap and they are much easier to work on then the MF 410. I am not bashing the MF410 but they are not easy to work on.

We ran Masseys from the late 40's until I quit farming row crops in the late 80's. The 410 is a good machine and does a good job. There are some places that are tight to work on, but I think the green, silver, and other red also has their weak points. I do remember having to go in several times when conditions got bad and clean up for the green and silver machines. If you have an established older dealer nearby you should have no problems.

gas or diesel?

Dad had a diesel one for many years. 23.1x26 tires, ran a 43 corn head. The only real bad repair I remember was the thresher throw out bearing. The local dealer was an old established one but always had a hard time getting us the right parts. Needed a head gasket on one occasion, and the dealer gave us the wrong one 2 times before we went to a shop that specialized in Perkins to get one(kept giving us 318 parts, this one had a 300). The pistons were and interesting beast, they have a "combustion cup" with a pointed spike in the middle of them.

One January the engine died near the end of the last field of corn. We drug it into the fence with a tractor and there she sits to this day(some stuff has been cannibalized for the later machines). It was replaced the next year with a 510, then a 540. Parts were easier for both the 510 and 540.
