420 Industrial

I was offered the chance to buy a 420 today that is entirely painted industrial yellow. The serial number tag was on the tractor but not in great shape. All I could get off the tag was 945XX for a serial #. That is a late 1956. The front grill had the chrome John Deere on it and not the medallion. The tractor has down swept exhaust and what appears to be a non-adjustable wide front end, square tube. Seems like an industrial model but I remember at one point being told all 1956 models were green. Anyway to verify this is actually an industrial? Paint looked original and it is the kids of the original owner selling the tractor. They said look at it and make an offer. It has a leaking valve cover, bad, and the TOM is leaking bad as well. Rear tires are not weather checked and have some tread. Front look to be original tires with weather checking. Its got a beat up original JD snow plow on it. The electrical system is junk and is missing the alternator. I'm thinking $500 as I don't need a project but I am sure if it is really an industrial it is worth more than that.

If the s/n is below 100000 it is a phase 1. True 420 industrials were not built until phase 2 which started with s/n 100000. it would also have an I model designation on the tag after 420.

The 420 would have a I next to it {420-I} can you see that on the tag? Did it have power steering or a reverser on it? Alot of the industrials did not all but alot did Can you post some pics? Chris

on top of the main case on the left of the transmission cover is a small flat area which would likely have a custom job code stamped on it that could denote yellow paint from the factory. mine is stamped c208 and other navy tractors are stamped c207.

I didn't get any pics Chris. No reverser but it did have what looked to bed the stock power steering. I didn't get a chance to run it so I'll get some pictures when I go back.

I knew there should be a special code somewhere but was looking on and around the serial tag. I will check for this when I go back. Thanks!

Certainly not an expert but it may have been ordered yellow by a state or local government. I have a International B414 that came yellow from the factory but not an industrial. Just my 2 cents worth.

You been hanging around the jockey's again? LOL If you have to make an offer a grand will let you sleep better. If it runs it's well worth it even if you don't need another project. BTW - drain holes are stopped up in the head.
