420 john deere stalling out

got a jd 420 that keeps stalling out when hot
does this after 1 to 2 hours of operation
backfires at times to when stalls
unit will start right back up after it stalls
any input would be great

I am pretty sure it is a valve sticking open. let it cool a bit and it will unseize. I have had this problme on a 312. Synthetic oil helps to keep em going longer, but the valve needs replacing and probably the guide.
 
Run your your tractor until it dies. Immediately check for ignition. If no ignition you have a bad coil or other ignition component. I am not that familiar with the 420 JD L/G tractor, there is also a 420 Farm Tractor. WHAT engine does your 420 have in it? Many ignition system can have components that fail with heat. When the bad component cools off, the ignition will return. Does the engine seem to run longer in cooler weather? If so I would vote for the ignition system as your problem.
