420 Tachometer/Hour Meter

Is there anyone out there that can repair/rebuild the tachometer for my 58’ 420W? It’s definitely the tach as the cable spins when the tractor is running.

Nick does a good job. May also try Bobs Speedometer Service, Michigan 810-632-0400 or Stenes Speedometer Wisconsin. 715-834-4061

Thanks for the help everyone. I left a message for Nick. We’ll see what he says.
Dr. Dave, I may have to take you up on the tachometer if no one else comes through. BTW, it’s good to see you on here again. I’m anxiously awaiting photos/documentation from your next restoration.

I’ve had this old 420W that me and my dad did work with when I was a young kid. It was old and fairly worn out when he bought in the 80’s (but always started right up). He gave it to me several years ago and it has just been sitting (gee, thanks dad). I’m 47 now and last November I finally decided there’s no time like the present to have it restored (which is code for my wife says it’s ok to spend the money). Had most of the gears and all bearings/seals replaced in the trans (they were all worn including ring/pinion), replaced trans input shaft, rebuilt the non working “big dish” power steering pump (luckily I still had some spare parts), fixed all the leaks in the rock shaft housing (not the horror story I thought it would be), replaced rusted out gas tank, and had everything swapped over to spin-out rims (I always hated those long axle stubs sticking out). Anyways, no more leaks and she runs/drives great. Now I’m getting all the little things (gauges, steering wheel, seat, lights/light brackets, wiring harness, lam shell fenders, etc.) rounded up while the tractor waits in line for disassembly, prep, and paint (and I save up the money for it).

Took a break for a bit when life got busy. . . I jumped into restoring a 1978 Toyota FJ40. . . then restored a couple pinball machines. . . Then renovated a building I moved my business to. . . then made the logical turn back to working on some tractor stuff.

I've been tackling a 1960 JD 430 Standard restoration. Trying something a bit different this time by documenting the work with videos vs. just pictures. Posted some stuff on YouTube if you are interested. Not sure if I'm allowed to post a couple links here but will try anyway.

There are some others. . . I'm sure you can find them if you are interested.

Make sure that cable is actually good, it could be turning with engine but partially broken. You can take it out easily. You can also use cable on electric drill to check tach. I replaced on on 430 quite a few years ago. I wasn't worried about originality and found one on e bay I think that worked.

I’m working on my 57 420 and have been watching some of your videos on YouTube. You are making my life a lot easier. I recently resurrected a Bally Harlem Globetrotters pinball machine that has been in my wife’s family for 45 years. My grandkids are the 4th generation to play this machine. Thanks a ton for the awesome videos as I’m fixing my 10 year parked 420 that broke the clutch cam. Of course I figured I might as well rebuild the engine while I have it split. Then there’s the leaking pump, leaking rock shaft, and other various needs. While I’m here I might as well ask if you have an extra clutch cam for a 420 in your parts that you might part with?

I don't want to take over @sluhbmet 's thread, but thanks for the feedback on the videos. I have more to edit and post -- it just takes a lot of time to do.

If you want you can send me a PM with the part(s) you are looking for. I'm not sure which part the clutch cam is in your situation so more details will help.

Thanks!
