I am looking at a 420U with a loader, No idea what kind of loader. Owner says it is very strong whatever that means. I am wondering if I can rig this thing up to handle a 1400 lb round bale? I am concerned about the older JD hydraulics having enough power? I only have to be able to lift the bale enough to dump into round feeder. I think this tractor would weigh around 3900 or so without loader. I know I should get newer and bigger but hard for me to pass up a 2 cyl JD.

I have a 420U with a "Lord" loader on it. It has a separate hydraulic pump that drives off the crank pulley. the weak point in this set up is the front axle and I have seen pictures of them that were bent. A 1400 pound bale would be at the limit and then some. Now maybe on a bale spear on the 3 pt. I have lifted some heavy loads on the 3 pt on mine, More than was good for it. I have 14.9x26 tires loaded with Citristar. Each wheel and tire weighs 750 pounds for ballast on the rear. As you can see, it has a large bucket and I do use it for dirt, but a full bucket is really too much.

That is 700 to 1000lbs more than what the loader and tractor were rated for new. This is 50 some years later or wear and tear.
Some operators try it anyways. Failures, accelerated wear and incidents causing injury or death are the results.

Thanks for the input guys. After giving it some thought, I will look for a bigger tractor.
