Couple 4230's coming up on local consignment auctions. Both have cabs, 3point,dual hydraulics. One is a 1976 with the quad shift tranny and
around 7400 hours, the other is a 1973 with the 8 speed syncro shift tranny and under 5000 hours. How do you think they compare in value?
Thanks.

Prices are crazy right now. Unless the appearance is poor expect to pay above 20,000 dollars each.

Watch out for consignment auctions! Everyone wants to put their junk in those auctions to get rid of it. Naturally you'd expect to pay more for low hours but you must carefully inspect the merchandise to determine the quality. Has the tach been replaced, etc. Auctions for private sellers are consistently higher quality than the big consignment events. Yes, things are pricey now for high quality equipment.

The 1976 should be worth more, not knowing the conditions,, but in 1976 Deere made several improvements in the 30's,,any of them with outboard shifters had the improvements..

While tractor values are up, I doubt either would fetch 20k. They'd have to be particularly nice, and a 4230 is a pretty common tractor, a bit small for a lot of jobs. In my neighborhood, either of those would likely not be original hours, either, unless they were a one-owner small farmer retirement tractor, and then likely wouldn't be at the local consignment auction.

Do your homework before buying at a consignment sale. They are not all bad but the bad ones are all there applies. Syngro are not as desirable as quad and 5K hours is possible but not probable. As for value I would think much lower than posted. The 4230s were slow starters many had 34in rubber and A/C usually needs repairs.

Still lots of demand for such tractors around me. When looking at area jockey's yards they are depleted of such tractors that are 100 HP and decades old. A fair number of people will not do any homework and will take it at face value. It's wet now here but guys will say to themselves I need to do something and up until now I have not had my corn, bean, or milk money to make a move. Tire condition should play a large factor in a bid as a lot of guys at least pay attention to tire cost. If I were a betting man at least here plus with good tires and nothing to throw cold water on the hours even if not accurate I would put money on going above 20,000 dollars even if it is only by 5 bucks.

At current fuel price, Deere 4230 values goes down and white 2-105 vaiue goes up....
The 4230 are notorious fuel addicts.

4230 with SGB and new tires with just under 8700 hours sold at auction north of Syracuse, NY for 16,500 today. I would have to find out type of transmission. Not a very late one from what I understand.

I agree with Larry. A quad range transmission will be more useful and hold better value over time. Other than that you will need to check out tires, cab, ac, and overall cleanliness of the tractor. A 4230 is not typically sought after, but if taken care of is a fine tractor to own and operate. Look at overall care of each tractor.

It's my observation a 4230 isn't bad... it's more or less a 4020. A 4240, however, is a thirsty beast. I have had both a long time.

I agree with you that my 4230 does not use much more fuel than my 4020's but heard plenty of farmers complain about 4240's with the 466 engines and early 4050's. Tom

I think the syncro will bring 4k less if they are both the same otherwise. The syncro is really discounted in the 30 series but as the owner of a dozen 20 series I could get along fine with a syncro in a 30 series. My 4230 is a quad because it was nice and priced very right the day I bought it. Tom

I paid 11,800 for this one a few months back from local farmer. Its a 1975 with QR,starts easy and runs great, has 6300 hours on it.Rear rubber was shot.I updated the brakes, new axle bearings and new rear rubber. It cleaned up pretty nice.
