4230 vs 4430

Hello. I have a 4230 that is hard to start in June. I have heard that is normal. A neighbor’s 4430 is going to be selling in the neat future. They both have a 404 engine? Was the 4430 easiest to start? What should I look at for potential problems? It would be used to pull a 5x6 hay roller. Yall have been helpful in the past. Thanks for any input.

I do some part time work on a farm where there is a 4230, two 4430s and a 4240. None of them are hard starters.

The EARLY 4430 and 4630 did not start as well cold as the later models did. The early models have the Bosch Y type injectors with the return line on the top. Late models have the Bosch straight injectors with the return line on the injectors side.

Most early models didn't start well cold even if the rat trap linkage DID work right...

I always felt that the 4430 and 4230 and 4630 were sort of harder starters, None the less make sure the valve lash is in spec and checking the timing is not a bad idea. A diesel shop here in CO always bumped a few degrees of injector pump timing to compensate for elevation if the complaint was hard starting. If the engine has blow by it might affect that as well. Starter and battery condition, cables, and battery connections. just give it a check. If they are hard starters and are spinning over well then maybe look at another area of a problem Compared to case and perkins those deeres were not known to start better in any climate, but I would not consider it a problem.
