4240 Powershift vs Quad

What changes were made in the 4240 through it's years of production. I have a 4440 w/a quad and have had others, how does the powershift compare to the quad? Any problems with the 4240 that I should watch for? Thank you, Charlie

How do the two compare? The powershift has half as many speeds as the quad. Don't know what else to say on the tranny part.

That's up to you. I don't know your situation or what jobs you are going to do. Not to be a smart$%^ but we need more info and more detailed question. Do you want a transmission you can go from reverse to 8th without using the clutch. If not then stick with the quad. Some guys prefer the powershift and others prefer the quad.

We got along fine for years with a 4020 powershift for haying and chore work. Extra gears might have been nice but it was nice to shift non stop through the first 6 gears in our hills baling hay with varying windrow densities.

I would take the powershift over a quad for what you are doing.

Quad has more gears, but my experiences cutting hay with one was when you needed to go up one gear, it involved going from A4 to B1 or something like that. Two levers, unsycronized shifts, etc.

The 50 series is better - with the 15 speed power shift.

In the 30/40 series people seem to prefer the quads in the 50 series the 15speed powershift helps resale and is preferred. If you happen to have a syngro in a 30 series they are hard to sell.If you happen to have problems a powershift can be costly to fix but they generally are very durable. To operate they are about the same.In the 69/72 2520 to 4020 the powershift adds value and a nice 2520 or 4000 due to known numbers of [356&403] they bring 30%+ premium if nice.Dont know of updates but 4440 with turbo was about as efficient.

both are very good transmissions but for chores or haying go with the powershift I have a 4640PFWD w/quad and a 4440 w/quad and a 4040 w/powershift the 4040 does all baling we also plant and a lot of chore type work with it our 4960 has the fifteen speed powershift which is really nice to use but, for a lot of things such as baling or planting I actually prefer the 8 speed heavy tillage or running a forage harvester the 15 speed is awesome
