hey guys figured id give you an update on the 4250 i was asking about. 5600 hours, 4wd powershift. started unassisted in 15 degree weather. shifted good and everything worked, 2 scv"s. it will need front tires replaced. no oil leaks, no major dings or rust. cab could use a headliner down the road and blower motor was a little noisy. tractor ran excellent and overall was a decent machine. i purchased it for 23000. as far as matienence goes what should be my top priorities. dealer is changing hydraulic oil and servicing it along with putting it on the dyno.
thanks.

I'd make sure you are there when they drop the hyd. oil and have them remove the sump screen and look at it to see what's there. If it's full of metal that's not a good sign. If pretty clean that is good.

Sounds like a real good deal ! Wonder why ? Maybe it is a location thing ? Maybe that is just too small for your area anymore ? A tractor like that in Ohio might fetch twice as much.
Does the dealer have any service/maintenance history on it ?

I would replace the water pump as a precaution unless you can prove how old it is. The gear driven water pump can put anti freeze in the oil when it starts to fail. I always recommend changing them at around 3000 hrs. Have seen a couple fail at less than that. Sounds like you got a good deal.

i was there yesterday, saw them drop the oil and pull new hygaurd off the shelf. i did not check the sump screen i will have to do that. they are pulling the records, they did tie rods and seals for the 3pt sensor shaft? they beileve it has been rebuilt and i will have to address the water pump. im not sure why it was so cheap but i figured id better snatch it up based on the other prices i have seen locally. another one is advertised for 30,000 with 12000 hours on it. thanks again. ill try to get some pics posted.

I wanted to add it is not unheard of to get a good deal from a dealer. Glad you snatched it up !
I once bought a small Kubota with a loader and belly mower from our local dealer. Price seemed to good to be true so I jumped on it. When they delivered it a few days later I wasn't home but Dad was and the salesman was bellyaching about how he didn't make anything on it. Wa ! Wa ! I think the dealer was just so screwed up they didn't know which one they were pricing to me. Glad I had the deal done and paid for !

I wouldn't be too concerned about the water pump if the weep hole is open. Anti freeze went to the crankcase when the water pump seal went bad and the mud dabbers had plugged the weep hole. We always check the weep hole when one comes in the shop and then fashion some brass screen so the mud dabbers can't plug the hole.

I think you did right to snatch it up.

Maybe some office person has dyslexia and it was to be 32,000 and not 23,000 ?

Those tractors have a really good track record in general.

Since I'm bored I went to tractor house to look at 4250 models

WOW how can you even compare ? Prices are all over the place from $ 22,821 to 46,500 2wd or MFWD doesn't seem to have much rhyme or reason either ?
And the funniest part to me anyhow is the listing show them at anywhere from 100 HP up to 150 HP ???? seems know one can agree on what HP these were to of been ? LOL
I've seen that before on that site.

It's an European model, which explains the price. Notice the "E" in the serial number. Ask Tx Jim and some of the more experienced fellows but all my JD buddies and mechanics told me to stay away from them. Good luck!

Looking at the pictures it looks to be a european model. It has the lights on the front fenders, parking brake, and tilt-out rear window. I don't know why they never put those windows on the american versions, I think they are great. Must be they can get these tractors cheaper over seas, ship them hear, and sell them? I know the three points are set up a little different. I looked at one a couple years ago in Fowler Michigan that was from overseas. I fell in love with it but turned out the guy did't want to sell it very bad adn I was pushing my budget. Looks like a pretty good machine. Im kinda jealous:)

I think you got a REAL GOOD DEAL!!!!!!!!!!

There are several out there being used so, you should be alright. I was told the electrical system is totally different and I think the hydraulic system is too but not positive on that. Getting parts from overseas is a major issue. I'm not that experienced but all my mechanics pretty much told me they would not work on them. Hopefully, some of the more experienced JD fellows will give you some useful info about them.

(quoted from post at 15:19:05 01/21/14) what were the major differences in the european models and were they something i should have stayed away from?

Because I only viewed the one photo I posted I missed it was built for European sales but @ $23K I think you still got one heck of a deal. I think parts availability won't be a problem.

No difference between a European and American model except lighting kit and handbrake. European models also have short axels. I have a European 4255, great tractor, local dealer has no trouble getting parts , and most things are on the shelf. You got a great buy.

Looks like a nice tractor. The early 40 series did not have lights up front.Should give you a lot of service at two wheel drive price.I assume they are made in Waterloo unlike some of the new ones. The price of front tires are about the same as rears.
