427 Tall deck rebuild

I'm looking to replace the 366 in our '81 GMC 7000 with a 427 TD that I found. Anyone have any tech advice to build a motor up for more torque/power? I read plenty about building stroker/ high hp motors for racing etc. but I have yet to see anything about building a truck specific motor. I'm not looking to spend a fortune just some mild upgrades to get more torque and pulling power out of a 427 when it's time to replace the 366. Thanks.

I agree with the stock rebuild with a good free flowing exhaust. If you HAVE to put some aftermarket in it, contact a reputable cam manufacturer and talk to a sales rep. Be honest about what you have and at what RPM you want your power. Other than that, gas prices will probably not drop and if you try to hot rod it, that can get pretty expensive.

I have "86 C7000 366 cu in. I read somewhere the 366 is sought after because gas mileage is a litte better tahn 427-454. I haul 7 tons of gravel at 5 mpg"s. That"s expensive, ouch... I also heard all the Chev Tall Blocks get around 5 mpg.
3208 Cat was availble in my "86, that would probably be a 10 mpg engine & lots of power.
Good luck, Dennis.

Too much to change to throw a 3208 in it. I found a 427 TD for practically nothing. I had a 427 before it did pretty good. If I could get 10 mpg out of any motor it would be worth it but I don't see that happening.
