42R combine parts.

Hi all. I’m new here and mostly a Deere guy but I picked up a McCormick 42 R combine back in May and want to get it running to harvest a few acres of spelt. The straw rack has a damaged section and the part of the drive slip clutch has a crack in it. Does anyone out there have a 42 or 52 parts machine that I could buy replacements off of?

Looks like “straw rack” is a threshing machine term or maybe it is a regional deal. In my world in regards to a combine they are generally called “straw walkers” Are parts of the troughs on the bottom side of them also missing?

the clutch ,repair weld it ,is my thoughts,but happen the it did not release is a puzzler to me. Better investaga the issue .

Harvester called them straw racks. A straw walker would be a walker type straw rack. The 42R did not have a walker straw rack. It had a shaker.

Roger that, thanks for the correction. The whole thing must shake like a sieve then. Must be a counter weighted crank to offset the shake. On combines there are two sieves moving opposite of each other to offset the momentum.

What's the part number on the yoke to the left of the crack? It is facing the camera, but upside down & poorly lit in the pic. You might have to fab your own pieces for the rack in there. It may also pay to post a want ad on this site & others for those parts that are broken.

Both ends of the straw rack are held by links that allow it to move front/back. The front links are connected via pitmans that are driven by a shaft that is situated crosswise on the machine. I don't think that counter weighting crossed the minds of the designers of this machine.

Parts catalog says the broken part is BB2073. The drawing doesn't look to me quite like the photo. So it needs to be verified. If correct, Parts Depot has several new ones on hand.

That slip clutch assembly is the same as the implement half of a pto shaft on a no. 12 mower for an F12.

That'd be an easy braze job... need to disassemble the clutch to fix it properly but it needs to come apart anyway to make sure it is not frozen.

I figured it would be likely that I would have to fabricate and repair but thought I’d try here first. As for a CNC plasma cutter, wish I had access to one. My concern with the slip clutch is whether it’s cast or forged.

The parts manual I have lists two different numbers for the slip clutch knuckle: BB 2 073 used in 1940 and 1 978 K used from 1941 on. Not sure what year this machine is but I’ll try to figure out which one I have.

Thanks, that’s the number in my parts manual. Never heard of parts depot. I’ll check them out.

Maybe the different part number is the reason the drawing and your part don't look quite the same to me. Unfortunately, Parts Depot isn't showing any of 1978K.
