430?? Brakes!!!!

A friend called me to look at a tractor he took in to his shop to fix had no clue what to do. When I got there it was a Case 430 row crop wide front?? According to the decals the serial plate is missing!!! He said the customer said the brakes don"t work. After looking the left brake pedal was broke off gone and the right brake was way out of adjustment. I noticed it has narrow flat brake covers, they are not like a Farmall disc brake cover. Dose the tractor have disc or band brakes? How else can I check for what series tractor it is?? Dose any body have a left brake pedal and spring?
Thanks!!!!

Go to www dot caseih dot com and you can pull up the parts manual for the 430. It will have disc breaks. I had a broken right brake pedal on one of my 300s. I went through the local Case/IH dealer and got one from a salvage yard or you can call around yourself. It was worth it to me to have them do the walking through the yellow pages. Very easy to work on.

The 430 could have either disc brakes (early models before mid-1965) or band brakes through the rest of the production run (mid-1965 through 1969). The serial number break was 8262800.

If the tractor has an Eagle Hitch it probably will with have discs. Draft-o-Matic tractors started to be produced in mid-1963 so they could have either.

If you need discs.....well be sitting down when you as the price.

BTY...post a picture if you want to confirm the model or narrow down the serial number range - Joe

Joe when you refer to band brakes are you refering to the band actuated caliper? If so the parts book that I have shows that they started very early in the 1961 production run (6165269). My mid 1964 430 (8235640) has that setup and is the best braking system I have every used on a tractor. It is extremely difficult to apply them without locking the wheels if the tractor does not have an implement on it. Was wondering if there was a third setup used in later production. Lee

Hi Lee

The 300 round nose, 200B-600B and early 430-630s had disc brakes like those in the first diagram below. The later series switched over to the band style brakes depicted in the second diagram. - Joe

Joe, John Saeli has these disks at a much lower price than Case. Our 630's were switched to the band system in about 1962 as far as I can tell by serial numbers. No doubt the 530 and 430 switched much earlier than 1965 also. My 1960 model 630 has the discs.

Hmmmm. I read the serial number break wrong in the parts manual. My 1960 530 has discs, but my 1963 430, 1963 630 and 1971 570 all have the bands. I should have known the 1965 data I referenced was wrong based on the above.....

The serial number break was 6165137 which would have been in the late 1961 production year (the last Rock Island serial number in 1961 was 6172550). The serial number break I incorrectly referenced earlier was for the early 430/530 combined parts manual which includes all models prior to 8262800.

Thanks for catching my error. - Joe

1966 - 530 had both band and disc brakes in one as the bottom parts photo shows. One actuated the other. They work the best if you cut reliefs in the steel plates like the fiber discs. this keeps them from getting hot and glazing over
