430 case powersteering

power steering pump must be leaking fluid into engine oil pan? I can't find fluid anywhere else. However dipstick only shows a small amount over full.
Is this a normal problem? My power steering has the 2 cylinders under the oil pan, wide front. Pump and reservoir is together. considering the age of my 430
I am thinking about just buying a new replacement pump.

the cylandars under the tractor usually is the problem ,,. easily rebuildable if you know the trix , head scratcher if you dont , so please ask ,, there should be plenty of help here ....,not sure what your problem is , perhaps a little rewording might help me

Yesterday I couldn't find either cylinder leaking. Today I washed the engine good and it does appear I have one-cylinder leaking some oil. But I still believe I have oil leaking by the pump shaft seal into front engine cover and into the engine oil pan.
I have replaced the packings in the other cylinder years ago. I remember it was not fun, maybe I can find the trix from someone.
Thanks for responding.

The power steering is a closed system, and can not empty into the crankcase. replace the pwr steering filter if you feel compelled to do anything. Place a diaper under each cyl, then cycle the cylinders by turning the steering wheel for 4or 5 minutes in place. Let us know what transpires. Chuck Machinist

I thought since there was an oil seal on the shaft that it may let oil seep into the front housing. I have a loader on the tractor, so I raised the front
front end and cycled the cylinder a number of times and didn't see a leak. I guess by having all the weight off the front end it wasn't very much stress on
the power steering system therefor no leak at the cylinder. Thanks Chuck for getting me straight on the closed system. The day I really lost a lot fluid I
was moving heavy logs, a lot of weight on the front end.
Thanks again for responding. Now I am open for any tricks about removing the cylinder.

Loren's post brings back that no fun experience. I didn't remember the pivot pin removal. I think I was able to turn the wheels one way and then kind of
roll the cylinder out. Now if I can find my flat metal tool I made, order the seal kit, (I still have the package from my last time). If I remember
correctly, this snap ring is no fun either.
Thank again Chuck this will all help this 78 year old. Now if I just find someone to help me get up and out from under this working 430.

Here is some of my project over the years, Chuck

Mr. York , Never had a leak on the pump drive ,No doubt it can happen.. I have used rotella motor oil in my 530 that leaks from the cylinders in the summer for raking ,heavier oil slowed down the leak ,.steered fine too.. I would suggest trying some engine oil in the pump , Ar least The oil that gets to the engine wont hurt ,,. btw ,,The power steering fluid will clean up the engine., Lucas makes engine oil sealer and hub sealer ,,. both are compatble with engine oils ,,. Might give them a try

I am definitely going to keep an eye on my engine oil level. Ater moving some heavy logs I can see the one cylinder is leaking. I have the seal kit on the way, so I should be able to tackle this thing next week. This is a working 430 Diesel not a parade tractor, it has given me great service. I had a 530 Diesel about 15 years ago. It was a great tractor also. I moved and sold my house, the buyer wanted my 530, in fact it was a deal breaker on the house if he couldn't have my tractor. So I worked a deal and let the 530 go.
Thanks again for responding.

Final report. I got new cylinder seal kit from Saeli and started to remove the cylinder, discovered the previous owner had welded the adjustment plug to the piston end. Realizing that I probably was going to destroy the piston, I hunted and found a complete used cylinder from Bill Wallace. After about 2 days of cutting, chiseling, and cussing (no torch available) I successfully cut the end of the piston off. I proceeded to install the seal kit in the used cylinder from Bill. Rolled the expansion ring into a grove in order to slide the piston out of the cylinder (no success) ring was still holding the piston. I then rolled the ring back on the keeper grove and then rolled the ring off the end of the piston (Success). Remember this is all being done through the hose fitting hole. New seals and new ring installed. Then came the threads on the adjustment plug, thank goodness Bill had sent the plug along with the cylinder. After working very slowly on these very fine threads (success). I rolled the cylinder in place, attacked the nut on one end, installed ball seats, installed adjustment plug with a homemade retaining clip. Added fluid and rotated the wheels about 8 to 10 times. COMPLETE SUCCESS!! Thanks for your help and sympathy!
