430 Case question

Son is looking to purchase a 430 Case to do a little pasture clipping with a 6' Woods cutter. Says tires are in good shape and it doesn't smoke when started. Sounds solid when running according to Son. Tractor looks in good shape,tin, no serious oil leaks, pretty clean tractor. What are these tractors bringing on the market. What years were they made and how dependable are these tractors. My Dad had several Case tractors while farming and I thought they were pretty solid tractors back then. They are great little tractors, built from 1960 until 1969 when the model number changed to 470.( only a few minor changes, the biggest likely
being change from a generator to an alternator). The steering on the early 430 was different than the later ones which used hydrostatic
steering. Early ones often had a triple range but that option was eliminated in the last few years of production. Early ones had eagle hitch or
3 point hitch as options, where later ones had only the 3 point option. There were numerous axle, wheel options. You didn't say if the tractor
you are looking at is gas or diesel. The 188 diesel is a great engine. Post a photo or 2 of the tractor and many on this forum will give you
some guidance.prices vary depending on condition and location but $3,500-$5,000. Would catch most of the better ones in good to excellent condition around here.

I currently have a 1968 Case 530 with 3pt.....triple range.....late style power strg.....Case loader. I have had
several versions of the Case 430 over the last 20yrs. as I bought and fixed several of them to support the hobby.
They are by far the greatest little tractor you can find and use. I have used them with several different types of
loaders as well as a back blade and both rough cut and finish type bush hog rear mowers.

This family of tractor is very easy to maintain by reasonably mechanical people and most parts still reasonably
available. I would try to get as late a model as possible with the newer style power steering. Also, become familiar
with the pros and cons of the Eagle hitch vs. 3pt. hitch. Also, all of mine have been gas engines simply because I
have always been comfortable with gas engines....carbs....ignitions and I have no other diesel stuff, so it just
makes sense for me personally.

Now I've learned that the hydraulics are working but very slow. Could it be just a filter stopped up or something major? Comments please on what causes this and cost to fix. Seems like most everything else works pretty good. Thanks guys for your help and comments.

Here is a 1961 431 with the 188 Diesel engine. No power steering, eagle hitch, triple range transmission. Paid $3500.00 for it a year ago and probably
put another $1500.00 to get it like I wanted it.
Great tractor, I snowblowed the drive with it yesterday.

First thing I would check is the fluid level, it?s probably low. Good idea to change the filter too.
