430 Clutch problems

My 430 clutch (5speed with live pto) seems to be out of adjustment. When I step on the clutch I can feel the free travel ending after about 2 inches of travel. It then travels about 4 inches before the tractor comes out of gear. At that point I can take it out of gear, but when I try to put it back in gear, it won’t go back in. You can hear it starting to grind the gears. I can only put in gear, once I shut off the engine. When I restart the engine, it works ok, but the tractor starts moving when I have released the clutch about 1 inch. The pto will not come on at all. Is this something that I can adjust with out splitting the tractor? It seemed to be fine a couple of weeks ago.

I believe the the free play should only be about 1" and is measured at the top of the pedal. Adjustment is on the torque tube, same side as clutch and has a jam nut. If that does not work you may have to split. I have had a similar problem and it turned out to be the clutch rod inside the tube was bent, I had to straighten and weld another piece of roundstock to it for reinforcement. Good Luck

Split and inspect. The finger clearances for both pressure plates need to be set perfect as well when in there.
Checking the bearings can't hurt either.
It's a picky little procedure and requires a step by step from the manual.1-800-522-7448

If it was working properly to mean both the live pto and trans clutch, it could very well be a bent rod as stated.

Since things went south in a hurry she will have to be split - me thinks.
