430 Power steering?

Was power steering an option on the 430 diesel wide fronts? Mine is arm strong, and might have to try sourcing the parts to make it power.

Further research has led me to believe that getting such parts is like finding hens teeth. What does the feasibility of using something like http://www.surpluscenter.com/Hydrau...ers/2x8x1-25-DA-DOUBLE-ROD-HYD-CYL-9-6845.axd as the two way cylinder and mounting something that would accept tie rod ends onto the steering arms. Mount the cylinder to the bolster with a bracket.

I received the seals to repack the power steering rams for my 430 today, so yeah they came with power steering.

But, +1 for it being too much fuss to make an armstrong model powered, but that's just me.

Maybe look for a junk 430 with power steering and rob what you need off it?

I believe the very early smaller 30 series (630 and down) tractors came with the Charlynn steering column mounted power steering system.
(Also VERY hard to come by) but the conversion is easy as there are no cylinders to mount on the front axle. I converted my 630 this way. If
you have a JI Case parts list and Case factory service manuals it should show this mechanism.

My 611B has it. Doesn't do much, but my steering box needs rebuilt, and I haven't even gotten around to checking the pump pressure to it. I saw the unti listed for 8 or 900 bucks new, still available, forget where. Add the price of a pump and plumbing, and the time/trouble of fabbing brackets. If you want I'll look in my manuals, it might have instructions for mounting it on a 430, it does for the 500s and 600s. Let me know.

I mean if you have the time and ability, then even if I wind up not using them, posting them won't hurt anything for someone else looking for that information. The more info we can get "archived" onto the internet on these old things the better, before its lost forever.

AFAIK it's all still available, the info I mean, I think the manuals are out there. This one is pretty clearly wrong for your tractor, it doesn't cover the 430, closest is a 411b. But just to get a general idea what might be involved, here you go:

Looks somewhat daunting, I assume the brackets and all came in a kit back when, you'd have to do a lot of fabrication. Might also be worth your while to try to find another steering shaft to slice up so if this project doesn't work out you still have a tractor. The usual Char-Lynn torque generator used in these old tractors was Eaton p/n 217-1015. First pic I wrote in the specs. They are obsolete but some replacement units are nearly identical. They are popular with the off road people and are readily available. They seem to run around $600 new but I don't recommend buying used as on your tractor it will be mount output shaft end down and any debris present in the unit will end under and destroy the output shaft seal. I have 2 of them with that seal blown. There are seal kits available but is just complicated enough to give the average guy fits, including me and I resealed dozens of them in the 70"s.

Char-Lynn with a gear driven hyd pump was usually used on the GP tractors. Utility models usually had a belt driven hyd pump with a front axle mounted hydraulic cylinder due to heavier front end, loader, some w/diesel. The Char-Lynn applies torque via the steering box while with the axle mounted hyd cylinder the only steering box torque is that required to move the hyd cyl control valve. The 2nd pic is the steering lever with studs. If you are going to use a Char-Lynn, especially with a heavy front, diesel, loader etc, you need to have those studs in very good shape and set to proper backlash between the studs and cam (worm gear). Worn studs/excessive backlash under stress can break the steering lever.

The rest of the pics is the installation procedure on the 00B tractors. I am only familiar with the 1960-1964 ag and utility 430 and it is the same or nearly so. Note that you need a side rail to mount the unit bracket. The side rail is an easy fabrication, the unit bracket not so much.

Well Joe at least you have the correct tractor here. What I have is earlier, mine is a '59. And as I said, the PS isn't worth much.

i have a case j.i 430 g 1962 tractor i need the parts catalog for it can anyone one here help ,s/n 8199450....there was a person that had one .its been 2 month an he sill not got back ..is the anyone that has the parts catalog that i can buy a copy of.i have a tractor that i can not get the righy seals for they have told me with out the right numbers it is hard to mach the right get to the power steering cylinder.
