44 A Starter Band

Working on my 44 A. I had removed the band around the end (away from the nose) of the starter. There was some 80 year old material between the band and the starter housing...can anyone tell me what this material is supposed to be? It's very brittle and will be going in the trash. I'd like to replace it before putting the band back on.

That and in addition to something else... fibrous, a very distinct cross pattern.

That being said though since it is 80 years young...it could have been installed by someone if it isn't supposed to be there. However, Steiners breakdown picture of the band does show something there, although it's not noted as a part available on the website.

Originally, there was a strip of "insulating paper" wrapped around the starter beneath the steel band. Typically, there was one "wire staple" holding it in place to the band.

Gasket material works well, and the staple (if present) can be unclinched, poked through the gasket material and bent tight again.

I've done it many times.

I just cut a strip from a sheet of gasket material to wrap around the openings and put the band over it.

Yes,, that is just paper, gasket paper or cereal box paper.. And it was stapled to the inside of the metal band to hold it in place...

3 or 4 wraps of masking tape works fine.
