440 wheeled tractor

I am near Omaha ne and ran across an odd tractor. A guy
near me has a 440 tractor with the gm diesel in it. It has three
point pto and a loader on it but the loader looks to have a little
welding on it. The rear tires look good but flat and the rims are
bad. He says it ran well but he has not ran it in a long time.
He said he wanted 1500 but might take less. Normally I would
be all over it as it looks pretty nice and a good project but I am
doing too much right now with moving and putting a roof on. I
would pass it on to the right person if someone wanted to fix it.
or collect it. From what I understand there were only 971 of
these made with the gm diesels but am no expert. Maybe this
is too much. i am not making anything on it but I think the guy
is a good person and I don't want some idiot mistreating him. I
think most understand

It"s about 54+ years old. If treated right a 2-53 Detroit lasts a long time and starts well. Then again if they just dumped a multi weight high ash diesel oil .the sleeves could be scored and the ports full of ash .
Who knows what adventures a machine that age has experienced.
Watch out for a busted front axle casting if somebody jerked a chain towing and broke the Center section.
Rebuild a detroit diesel with the N series sleeves/pistons and C series injectors .
The 440 was and is a pretty decent industrial tractor. They helped put JD solidly into the industrial market.

I have one of these and mine also has a model 51 backhoe attached. Right now the transmission needs some work. Anyone know a source for a used tranny?

The parts book is on the JD web site. Depending , parts will mix and match between 420's after serial number 125,001, 430, 435 and 440. Even some 1010 parts up to serial number 31,001.
The HD 1010 ring and pinion prior to 31,000 bolts into the late 420. And into any 435 & 440
