i have a gas engine and need to know what the timing should be set to at idle i have some issues with popping thru the exhaust and i replaced the points and condensor cap rotor wires plugs carb probably has a stuck or burnt valve but i only need to finish 15 acres of beans then it can go to the junk yard or someone elses farm but the popping is very bad just off of idle and on up since the muffler rusted out and its a strait pipe its even more annoying

not sure if it has advance weights i will have to look i just want to get the timing right on before i go any farther

You can't have one without the other. Static timing has to be correct, then the centrifugal weights have to advance and retard with rpm.
You can time the engine perfect on the balancer timing marks and the engine will run poorly if the advance is stuck or sticks intermittently.
