440IC Identification

I have what I believe is a 1959 John Deere 440IC but it doesn't have a serial tag. Throttle is on left side of panel, dipstick for tranny near gear shifter. Is there a way to confirm year and model number? I am new to crawlers and this forum, any help is much appreciated.

Thanks, Peter

Welcome to the forums.

It is a JD 440IC model. The 2-cylinder gas engine and that sheet metal makes it a 440IC. The 430C/435C sheet metal was very different and while sheet metal was somewhat similar, the 1010C/2010c had 4-cylinder engines. The dipstick in the top of the transmission indicates 1959 and after. The throttle on the left indicates it is serial number 458703 or prior. During the 1960 production year, at serial number 458704, the throttle lever was moved to the center of the dash. Indications are it is a 1959 to mid 1960 440IC. I believe the serial number tag for the Gas engine crawlers was on the left side of the bell housing. (The diesels had it at the bottom of the dash.) I know that is the about the same info you got on the jdcrawlers site from Lavoy (he specializes in these early JD crawlers), but without the tag it is highly unlikely you will ever figure out its exact year.

Hello Pete, welcome to YT! When will the next batch be ready? :) You’ll find we’re a curious bunch here, what is it? Hope your new project fulfills all the plans you are dreaming for it.

Thanks, much appreciated. I am new to forums and find it impressive how helpful and knowledgeable everyone is. I originally didn't know how to post a pic on JD but Lavoy narrowed it down without it. Thanks again, I look forward to learning more about these machines.
