4430 clutch

I"m working on a 4430 with a QR trans that won"t move. how do you tell if the engine clutch is slipping or if it is in the trans clutch unit? It trys to move in gear but won"t pull. Its been used for bailing and the guy running it told me he runs in D1 and just pushes the clutch in when the bailer is getting overloaded. I"m thinking is the engine clutch. When split at the back of engine can you also get to the trans clutches? Thanks Warren

Have you put an oil pressure gauge on the trans?
When in there replacing the trans pump drive shaft. The "uptime" pump is required to restore oil pressure due to aging seeping trans seals.

I have not checked the pressure. Would there pe a port on the valve on the left side under the cab and what should it read ?

Too complicated and too much info to do a step by step over the internet. 150-175psi if memory serves. Nothing beats a service manual in hand.1-800-522-7448.
This link may work to get to the the JD web site's parts lists.

There is a hex shaft that runs from the crankshaft back through the transmission charge pump and all the way to the rear of the case. These have been known to strip.
I would do the pressure tests first but if low, you can inspect by removing the top link of the 3 point, removing the 3 point transmission bracket, removing the plug behind the bracket, and then pull the shaft.

There is a port on the operating valve houseing marked "clutch", it is a small o-ring thread, if you don't have what you need borrow it or remove the plug and take it to the hydro. shop, get a 300psi gauge and hose set-up. It should have 165 psi at that port with the clutch pedal up, if it don't put that plug back in and remove the PTO brake plug(located near the clutch port) now see what you have with the PTO off and the clutch pedal up,,then see what you have with the pedal down,if it's still low through all this pull the trans pump drive shaft and see if it's worn in the area where the pump drives about 18 inches from the rear, if it is the trans pump is bad, causeing weak clutch pressure and most likely took the clutch out too. Of course you should check the filter and sump screen along with all this..you didn't say if the rest of the hydraulics were working okay... Like B&D stated there is a "lot" to take in here if your not familur with the system, it's a matter of seeeing what you have and don't have then decideing what to do next..

Thank you all for the info I will have to take my gauges and fittings out and check pressures on it. I was told all the hyd. worked fine and the pto was running the bailer with no sliping

That's pointing to the clutch, but should check the pressure anyway, when you get into the clutch re-seal the operating piston and check the pilot bushing,,,anyone know when the clutch was changed last ?

Don't forget to tell him the clutch is adjusted so the fingers will bottom out and the clutch will slip BEFORE all the paper is worn off the discs and it goes "metal to metal".

In this scenario, he will have the correct clutch pressure, but the clutch will still slip.

Also, it wouldn't hurt to drain the tranny oil and see what sort of debris is in the sump screen.

All true, if it's been slipping as bad as it sounds the plates will be toast anyway, so the problem may by compound,,low clutch pressure for a number of reasons, yet to be determined, and fried clutch plates because of all that....I have seen old plates just "peel" apart from old age, and then the paper from this end up in the sump screen. Like B&D stated "there is a lot to consider here",,
