4430 good or bad

first question does a 4430 start as hard as a 4030? I know its a different engine and is a 4430 a good tractor see alot of them in the 12000 to 18000 price range with 7500 to 9000 hours on them are they worth it and what are some bad points going to be using on a 535 baler so we can actually bale a little faster than the 4030 going to kill my poor feeding tractor baling hay with it

My 4430 never has been a great cold weather starting tractor but not as bad as some. Usually if it gets below 15 degrees, you pretty much know it will need plugged in. I have 8300 hours on the clock and it has been a great tractor. A little hard on fuel but that has been about my only complaint. My 4440 starts a little easier but uses a whole lot less fuel. I say if you find a 4430 that is priced right, I would not hesitate to buy it. If you don't mind spending a few more bucks...find a 4440. More power, more iron, easier on fuel. Just my 2 cents...

i looked at a 4440 but most around here if they have less than 9000 hours they think they are worth 30000 and i dont see that kinda money

also going to go look at one of those its a little newer and looks a little nicer on the inside but its also considerably more money are they any good?

The 4430s are a big step better than 4030s.The 4230 also had the 404 and were also slow starters. They are actually a better buy than the 20 series as they arent really a collector yet.Of course there are some rare gas ones and some low profiles that are.The cabs are still very quiet and comfortable. The 4030s just werent the best and I pesonally would rather have a late 4020.The 40s and 50s were another improvement and cost more but still bring around their original price due to the shrinking dollar. When tractors are 30 years old condition can mean 50% of their value

I think that the 4240's and 4440's are some of the best Deere's made. They have many improvements over the 30 seres, better seat, electrical system,AC system, better low end power, and a "much" better Quad Range transmision. You normaly get what you pay for, and their high price reflects their better value. Around our area most of the 4430's and 4630's were worked hard as the "Big" tractors on the farm, in the 70's a round here small farms rented out to larger farmers and they were the normal size tractor for our area, we worked the tar out of a few of them as we grew from 7 or 8 rented farms to over 40 (farms in our area are mostly 160 acre size, and not many over 75% tillable) as we went into the 80's we,and others went to 86's for larger 4X4 power, this took a large load off the 150 hp tractors ,thus a lot of the 40 seres around here were used as planter/drill use and hay work, so they didn't see the long tough hours tuging moleboard plows like the 30's did. Most of the 4430's around here are worn out,a couple of times....

I agree with you Jim, that's why I said "some of the best ever made", the 40 series have a bit simpler electric system on them, no Circuit boards to give trouble. The 50/55 have a much better powershift transmission over the old style 8spd.

thanks guys going to start lookin for a tractor this next month or so think i might even go look at a 4040 but my uncle has one that is kinda a money pit but all the other people i talk to love theres

good to know why is that exactly what is the big difference in them? they are about the same money around here but it seems the 4240 is harder to find

A 4040 is a 4230 with different decals it will have a 404 engine, the 4240 has a 466 engine and the same transmission as a 4440, the 4240 is a better buy.

Your 4030 has problems if it's a hard starter. Mine will start down to 20 degrees with no help. And it has for the 20 some years I have owned it. In my opinion, the 329 engine is as good or better than a 404. My 4030 has been a excellent tractor. 4430's were notorious for bad rear ends. Also, most of those Southern tractors are just totally abused and worn out. You might try buying a good one out of the upper Midwest?

my 4030 has been in northeast ks for at least 20 years i believe its gettin harder to start it really probably needs head pulled and new pistons and sleeves and head redone but i think i may just go for a bigger tractor instead
its a good tractor perfect for a feeding tractor just not big enough for the 535 baler unless you are on flat flat ground any slope and it lags power
