4430 head gasket

the book reads torque to 115ftlbs run then re-torque to 135ftlbs. It has been some time since i have had to re-torque a head gasket. Can i get buy with 135 during assembly and eliminate the extra tear down? We are using a john deere kit with new head bolts and it came with a Victor head gasket.
 
Torque to 115ft.lbs. following the proper sequence then set your torque wrench to 135 ft. lbs. and follow the sequence again. Then finish your assembly.
 
Sometimes/MOST times it pays to follow instructions (why would they bother otherwise). I am a firm beleiver in "Read the instuctions" - be it a lawnmower or kids toy.
 
We did it on our pulling tractor and we were still blowing head gaskets every few weeks. Then again there were some other sources for failure too.
 
If you were to torque it to 135 first then warm it up and torque it again to 135 you would still gain on most of the bolts as heat and vibration will set the gasket. The reason for only torquing to 115 cold is so you don't have to loosen each bolt before re-torquing. The non re-torque gaskets used in some applications are a different gasket material.
 
I take them down in 4 settings ending up at about 140, then send it out the door, not re-torquing, had no problems doing this for years, I am kinda "an@l" about marking each bolt on each run and working a good pattern..when you mark each bolt with a paint stick, you can tell at a glance that you got them all..
 
retorquing is a major pain. on 4010's its a royal cow since the injectors are right over the top of the headbolt, so you run it, then try removing hot injectors to retorque bolts. i imagine a 4430 has the same issue, just that the injectors are easier to remove. but follow deeres instructions. they do it that way from the factory, so it oviously works.
 
With the special socket you don't have to remove the injectors or rocker arms on either 4010 or 4430. You do have to remove the injector clamps on the 4010. Snap on makes the socket.
 
I share the sentiment of Tim S, over torque them a few pounds, button them up and send them out.

I have never had to retorque, and never had one leak.
 
Yes David, and do them in steps and "don't" miss one,,that's why I stripe them with a paint stick on each one as I go, you can look after each run and actually see that you got them all...even load on each bolt in steps makes it go down nice and tight..
