Working on a 4430 quad range that lost A and D. Shift collar and gear broke. We have it disassembled and parts ordered. Do you need the dummy shaft, and snap ring tools to put back together?? or im sure they just make it easier and help not wreck the new snap rings. I would like to find the tools but cant find online. Thank you.

I have done it without the dummy shaft.

I DID, however, make the tools to hold the snaprings expanded for installation, as shown in the manual

Im doing one here right now,,the dummy shaft and arbor that holds it make things much easier,,a large snap ring plyer is needed and the little holders that keep the snap rings spread, at least for the back one,,also pay "Special" attention to the order that they go back together,,you will be very disappointed if you don't.. I will post some pics as I start my set up,, the parts will be in today or tomorrow.

Thank-you. I did notice they are different thickness. I did buy new ones incase I overspread when I took apart. I will make some snap ring holders

there are 4 thicknesses, they are progressively thicker from front to rear,,and get new thrust washers too the splined ones ,, dress the ends of the new snap rings to kinda square them up so the snap ring pliers will work better,if its your first time, I cant stress enough to be very careful with the order of parts as you go together..I will try to show you as I go back with this one,, Mail me your phone number,, it's easier to text a pic,,but I will post some on here to show others what to be thinking about if they need to get this deep into one..

I have been doing these for over forty years. Both with shafts and with out them. You will cuss both methods. I got so I could do them just as easy without pilot shafts. Snap ring spreaders are helpful. As Tim said keep track of order parts and thicknesses of snap rings as they all are different thickness. Got a 4030 to do and last three without pilot shafts were 4010, 4320 and 4440. Can be done either way. Be patient or you will blow a fuse! DW

A tip on the snap rings is to open them up then clamp them in a vise. Then place the tool in them to keep them open and release the vise. I find this is easier than using the cone. It's going to be tough to assemble without the shaft and arbor but not impossible. The big frame 5020 and 6030 are pretty easy to do without the tools because there is much more room in the case.

I use the dummy shafts on these little tractors,,I don't have one for 84's and 86's,,I use an old car scissor jack to keep tension on the shaft as I push the pinion shaft back through the gears,, pour some oil on things as you go,,it helps..and yes patience is important..

Tim, I think we both must went to the same "Hard Knocks" class. I do the same with small jack just to keep a little push as I walk parts and snap rings back in place. The "C" clamps to hold front high range gear tucked forward in front bearing pocket helps me a lot too. Like you, I have the two pilots that came on original tool boards. Don't have the big boy either but, I have done an 8850 that is one heavy finger bitter to handle. DW
