4430 rear end noise

76 4430 powershift makes a loud growling noise most
noticeable in 8th gear and only when you pull the throttle
back to slow down quickly. If you slow down gradually it
wont do it. Thanks

I had one that did that. Bearings were completely gone out on the differential bevel gear. Shafts are very short on them and I guess they can go out.

It did not make that much noise compared to how bad it was inside.

At about that age I started getting quite a bit of rear end noise, also. Anyway, the wife started complaining more.

If brgs on either side of differential are bad one will need to remove both rear axle housings & rockshaft housing in order to R&R brgs/races

Serial number and axle diameter ? How long do you plan on keeping and using the tractor . Don't use the tractor, the next new sound could increase the repair cost.

Serial number is 57xxx. Not sure on axle size but can
measure it in the morning.

Not necessary to measure. 86MM diameter axles were utilized up to serial # 067,999

Mine did not have the axle bearings out, but the bevel gear bearings out, the bevel gear is the one driving the crown. This became a parts powershift trans. The engine was very good and I put it on the front of another 4430 QR with a bad engine. I sold the powershift cab and few other parts and the other parts tractor did not cost much then.
The clue of the problem was huge amounts of iron in the transmisdion sump screen.

A little owling down hill with a powershift is normal, this one was super owling...

When it makes this noise I can step on the left brake and the noise goes away. Probably unrelated to that, in 8 th gear I can step on the brake and make something slip, let go of the brake and tractor takes off again. Hoping thats the torsional dampener and not one of the clutch packs in the power shift. If the pto stops when it slips is that a for sure sign it is? Thanks
