Just a quick question, we are painting a 4430 next, and this would be the first Deere we have done (mainly Olivers). We use PPG paint for the Olivers, what is the most recommended paint to do this tractor with? OEM, or is there something better? If so, what are the codes? Thanks, Adam

To me it depends on what you will be used for in the future. If it will be a user tractor, then implement paint will probably do. although the paint off the shelf at the dealer will begin to fade after a couple years and that is why I stopped using it years ago. To think you can paint a whole tractor for $40 worth of paint is kind of a silly notion because you will be re-doing it in the not so distant future. Even if you use hardner, it will still fade because it has no uv blockers in it. What I have been using for the last 12 years is ppg. I use a single stage urethane from ppg called Concept (DCC) on many of the parts and then I have a matching basecoat (DBC) that I spray on other parts, mostly the sheet metal. I tend to clearcoat everything, even though the single stage has clear in it and doesn't necessarily need to be cleared. I like to see those parts shine and the clear is amazing for that.

Every time I went to the paint store and used any type of standard paint code from them, I ended up dissatisfied with the shade. Some shades seem too blue and others seem to yellow. Nothing seemed spot on. So several years ago, I had my supplier help me make up my own formula. Now they keep my formulas on file, so any time I need paint, there is no guessing and no more taking panels off a tractor to have matched.

Alot of the top restoration shops are just using John Deere paint with hardener. It's consistent and the right color. It's very good paint.
