4440 medallion question

Can anyone tell me what the proper medallion on front of a 4440 fuel tank is? Mine is missing it completely. A lot of pictures I find including a 4640 and 4040 I used to own say John Deere under the deer symbol. But when I look at original JD lterature for the 40 series, they just have the deer symbol without the words. Any experts on here that can tell me which is correct? JD parts shows them not available and I can't even find a picture for reference.

You got my curiosity up! I'm not certain which of the two options is used when... I have an emblem off a 4030... no writing. We have a 2240... no writing. A quick goggle image search does show both. But it seems that models built for Europe look to have the writing on the emblem. But I'm not certain it's that black and white.

That’s my old 4640 I sold in 2016. I’m pretty sure that was the original medallion and you can see it has the writing. But if you look at old brochures on eBay, none have the writing.

We still own a 4630, 4440, and a 4040 that we bought new and they are still all original. I will look at them tomorrow. I am pretty sure that they do not have any writing on them. I do know that the 30 series medallion was made from cast aluminum and the 40 series was made from plastic.

Here’s the 2 millionth JD. 1981 4440 with 26 hours completely original. Clearly has the words John Deere under the logo. My 4640 was an 81 also. Any chance they changed the medallion between 78 and 82?

I checked our tractors this morning. 4630 has no John Deere, the 4440 does have John Deere, they are both cast aluminum. Our 4040 has a replacement one put on and that is plastic, from John Deere.

My 81 4040 had no writing.

Looks like 40 series came both ways. What year is your 4440? My 81 4640 and the 81 4440 that JD has both had the words under the logo. And all the plastic replacements have the words.

My dad bought a brand new 4440 in 1978. It was built in fall of 1977. I still have the tractor. The 1978 model year front emblem did not have the words "John Deere" on them, just the leaping deer. 1979 and later models had the words "John Deere" on them. There are subtle differences between the 78 models and later models. Most of the 78's had weld in place cab fenders, like the 30 series. 79 and later had bolt in fenders. I think in 1980 they increased the rear axle diameter. I think around 1980 they switched to Nippondenso for certain things, i.e. Injection pump, starter, alternator. The Denso pumps couldn't produce as much horsepower as the Bosch pump. We had a Bosch pump, the tractor was putting out 153 hp at the PTO, confirmed by 3 different dynos. When we cut the seal and turned it up for tractor pulling, with 6 full turns, we were getting about 350 hp at the PTO. The pump was fully stock, other than the screw being turned in. Can't get that out of a Denso pump. I think Deere did that on purpose.

I just worked on 4640 #10,457 (1978) that was bought new by a neighbor, it has the company name under the DEERE symbol.
