4450 jd, temp guage not working properly

Got in the 4450 last night and started it up cold, and the temp guage shot straight to hot and the "stop" light and engine temp light came on right away and stayed on. What could possibly cause this? I knew it wasnt running hot so i just kept using it for a couple hours and it ran fine. Not too expierienced with newer tractors, where should i start?

Check your wiring because of the test to see if the guage is working properly is to touch the wire going to sender on the block and see what the guage does. if it reads overheating you know the guage is at fault. I recently graduated from a John Deere mechanics program.

Replace the temp sensor/sending unit. We had a 4850 that did it and two 4455s that did it with really low hours on them. Its a really easy fix. Post back with your results, I would like to know how it goes.
